Jowben, if you really have a staghorn fern (Platycerium superbum) I believe you are killing it with too much water!
They grow naturally in the Australian bush and get watered when it rains and can go for weeks without water.
To help you identify your fern, stags only ever have a single plant and do not branch.
Back off with the water!

I've grown them down here in south Florida and can tell you, at least down here, you can't over water them. Too much sun is thier death toll though.

I wouldn't worry about the galvanized basket as that's always the preferred method of growing them.

I also use banana leaves or whole rotted bananas to feed them.

I used wire baskets, and packed them loosely with spagnum moss. You take the leaves with weave them them from the inside out, but it's best to have the spagnum moss cover the wire. New basel leaves will eventually cover it all.

Got ants, if you can 'weave the leaves through netting' you don't have Platycerium superbum aka staghorn, the nest leaves of which can grow around four feet across and the fertile leaves can dangle down around six feet.
Elkhorns (Platycerium bifurcatum) on the other hand, can be grown happliy on a netting basket as they regularly branch and can form a complete tight ball given a little time, and yes, THEY love water.
We have three species of staghorns native to Australia.
There are about a dozen species of Platycerium scattered around the world.

In my experience, all Platycerium are called staghorn in the US so this one could be just about anything. Different species require very different care and some are very hard to care for properly unless you are experienced. Most that are available here are Platycerium bifurcatum although many other species are avaialble on eBay and specialty nurseries such as Charles Alford's Rareferns. A picture may help us determine what you have.

I think I would move it into a little more shade for a little while and see if that helps?
