I was very surprised to find a bloom on this - I have just been growing it as a foliage plant.

Awesome looking plant. Do you have this in the house? when it opens You may be sayinghttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_1_111.gif

LOL - yes it is in the house - so far I can only detect a slight scent with my nose right up to it - hopefully it won't be bad, but if so it will have to go outside for a bit I guess.
I'm just still stunned it is blooming - was so not expected.

But now I have an itch to see if I can get Philodendrons to bloom ...

This plant is also known as dumb cane, its a poisonous plant, well all aroids are, but by all accounts this one can do some real damage to any pets to might think of chewing on it. I don't think this one should have a bad scent on the blooms though. The foliage reminds me a lot of Agloanema which is another aroid with similar flowers that make red, coffee bean like fruit in last summer.

yes, I have heard it's toxic. I also have a few philodendrons, and several big oleanders in the yard - none of my animals have ever shown any inclination to chow on any - but always good to know what could be dangerous.

This plant has beautiful foliage and has been a very easy grower. Apparently it's an easy bloomer as well, since I don't do anything special for it and it's a bit back from the window ...
Good to know it shouldn't be a stinker ;)

I just noticed a bit ago the bloom has closed - is that typical for aroids to close at night?

Its typical for them to close as they mature, depends on the species on how long the blooms last.
