Excessive algae is always due to having too many nutrients in the water. Feed less and do more water changes to get rid of the nutrients. It sounds like you will be getting a new light, but you will just get a different type of algae! You can use fast growing plants like Cryptocoryne, water lettuce, duckweed, etc. to compete for the nutrients with the algae. But just like any garden, you need to prune the hedges! When you remove any plant or algae from a tank, you are physically removing the nutrients from the water. Of course, if you only scrape the algae and leave it in the tank, none of the nitrogen will be removed and the algae will grow right back.
