weird fungi
I've have always wanted to learn about mushroom's but have never had the time. I often take photos of interesting looking fungi when I see it, and I recently seen this one. Anyone out there familiar with shrooms?

That's really cool looking. I've no idea what it is though.

Sorry if this posts twice. I posted it previously and it seems to have disappeared.
I asked my mycologist friend to ID your fungi and she wants to know the ff:
Quote:
Does it have gills, tiny pores, or none of those two? It looks like pores to me but it is hard to see?
How big are they?
Is it hard (woody) or soft?

While waiting for her professional ID, here's my ID:
Its a pretty shroom!
Oh well, it was funnier the first time around.

Try eating some Dave, you may be able to go on a trip without leaving home.
Just joking - some are dangerously toxic and others do strange and unpleasant things to your mind. A friend was a little too casual with wild mushrooms and ended up in hospital. She imagined her top lip was rolling back.

I got this reply from my mycologist friend, Dr. Andrea Porras-Alfaro in our Biology Department at Western Illinois University.
Quote:
Another mycologist (Dr. Jose Herrera) at Truman State suggested that it could be Cotylidia. This is a Basidiomycota (mushrooms group) I sent it to a couple of mycologist that work with the group to confirm ID and maybe give us a species name. It is hard to do taxonomy with just the picture but a trained eye for that particular genus may gives an ID. We will see.

See, I told you it was a shroom!
BTW, they all like your pictures
If you need any other ID's, now is a good time. Everyone in my department is humoring me after the scare I gave them with my ride in the ambulance and visit to the hospital on Wednesday.

Hello Althea,
This is updated info about the mushroom. We sent the picture to other mycologist expert in basidiomycetes and he thinks it is Cymatoderma sp.
Andrea
Dr. H,
David thinks it is a Cymatoderma sp. I looked them up and it does look very much like something that that genus would produce. I could only find a photo of Cymatoderma elegans which doesn't look like what they photo is of, but the gross morphology does look right.

Hi Dave,
I think 4 expert mycologists from 3 different universities, one of whom is a mushroom expert, have ID' d it as Cymatoderma sp.
I had them stumped for a moment because they thought I found it in Illinois.
I'm ok Dave, thanks for asking-- it was quite serious cardiovascular problems but caught it in time! OB and OB on Facebook have been wonderful companions as I've been home recuperating!

Well since you offered . Here's a few more. I don't see me getting enough nerve to try but I would like to know if any are thought to be edible. I understand if your not up to it. Thanks

Here's another expert:
David Fischer's AmericanMushrooms.com
You can email him the pictures. He's been able to identify everything I've sent him.
