Wow, that's quite some growing in a year.

It's amazing how fast this grows Rosie. We are located in Bakersfield, CA and our growing season will not end until about the end of October to mid November. By that time, it will have made it about half way up the roof.

Jerry, the flowers are a lot like beauganvilla. Does it have thorns?

No, it's not Bougainvillea. I don't think you can see it in this picture, but there is a Bougainvillea at the far right side of the patio. The pictures of the flowers is a closeup and the entire flower (or perhaps bract) is only just over 1/4 inch. No thorns. In fact, the foliage is quite soft. It's probably not a good idea to let it grow up on the roof Paul, but no, it does not force its way under the shingles and since the shingles are of concrete, I don't suppose we need worry about damage. We usually cut it back in mid winter and it's quite easy to pull it from the roof. I don't think it would be hardy in your neck of the woods Paul. My wife really doesn't care for it but it provides such good shade on the patio (where I do my repotting) that I really appreciate it on the really hot days. I'm amazed that it can withstand the heat that the shingles must be on our 100 + days with humidity down in the single digits.
