An aroid propagation question
Default An aroid propagation question

I have an Amorphophallus bulbifer that flowered a few months ago and now I have the old flower spike with a head holding a couple of hundred seeds. They are still green.
I want to try to grow new plants from the seeds.
My question is - how do I tell when the seeds are mature and how do I plant them?

I know that some Aroids only germinate from fresh seed, that is still within the fruit. I think my city has one of these in their greenhouse, it's very nice. I think it's called the Voodoo Lily, right?
I found a bit of info for you. Apparently it takes about a year for the seeds to mature, and you will know that they are mature when they go from green to red. You are in for a loooong wait!
Wouldn't it be easier to multiply via the leaf bulbils?

Thanks Camille. Bulbifer certainly multiplies readily from the leaf bulbils but I just hate to see seeds going to waste.
About 20 small self sown plants appeared in leaf litter around the previous year's growth and I potted quite a few of the larger bulbils and they all grew.
My neighbours all have A. bulbifers growing now.
