Things that make you say "Hmmmm".
This succulent is commonly called a pregnant onion. It reproduces by developing baby bulbs on the mother bulb and frequently produces a 4' spike which exhibits a cluster of tiny green and white striped blooms at the tip.
Today as I was giving the onion a drink I noticed a peculiar purple bud atop a 8" spike just to the side of the momma bulb. Upon closer examination it appears that some sort of Lily with similar leaves has taken up residence right beside the well established succulent. I used fresh potting soil when I repotted the Pregnant Onion last year and have no plants that even closely resemble the one in the photo. Somehow this beauty snuck in when no one was paying attention. Perhaps a squirrel is to blame. They're forever foraging in the grass and mulched areas around my house. I don't know much about Lilies. Is it possible the suspected Lily started from seed?
