Default Yellow Aroid - Lysichiton americanus

Today was such a nice spring day that I decided to go for a walk in my university's gardens. In the bog area there is one of the most beautiful aroids I've ever seen, it's so yellow! I was wondering what it was, but luckily, being in a botanical garden, everything is labeled! Lysichiton americanus, says the label. Probably very common in the US, but I thought I would share it anyways.

Camille

Thanks for reminding us of this stricking and interesting plat. I had to look it up and found out that "Skunk Cabbage" was actually famine food for N.West native Americans who learned to boil out the toxins. Apparently bears can eat it raw. Here is an interesting reference if you have time.

The fact that it's called skunk cabbage definitely explains the very strong funky-skunky smell the plants had! Now that I think of it, it had the same smell as another species of skunk cabbage that grew near my home when I lived in Northern VA.
Thanks for the link, it was very interesting.

Hi,

Wow, nice blooms. They are indeed very common in the western US, as far as I have heard. Here in the East we have a different, yet just as smelly skunk cabbage. Also an aquatic aroid.
Camille, could you please post this in the Aroids social group???? PLEASE!!!!

Thanks for the bump, you just reminded me that I have to post it in the aroid group! It completely slipped my mind. Better do it now, before I forget again!

Awesome pic!! I love Skunk Cabbage despite the smell. Grows wild all over Southern British Columbia where I am originally from! Thanks for sharing!
