I'm a Research Horticulturist at our local Botanical Garden. Specifically I head up the 'Plant Atlantic Program..bringing new plants to your garden!' (quote, unquote). I breed and select new plants to be released into the hort. markets as well as introduce underutilized ornamental plants for Atlantic Canadian Gardeners. Here is a pic of the new Philadelphus we just registered. It is being currently tested in the US and Europe and hopefully will be available to international markets in the next few years. It is already available in eastern Canada to a limited degree. I love my work! Between all this I take care of the orchid collection at the BG.

Currently I am working on finishing my A.S. degree in Business Administration/Management. I have working within the administration environment for many years and currently doing something I have always wanted to do...getting a certificate in horticulture and a Master Gardening certificate. I was working in the garden department at Home Depot until I severely fractured my foot and unable to accomplish this goal for another 18 months :(( currently I am a specialist in appliances/kitchens/bath and design. I also own my own business, high-end sinks, faucets, bathtubs and such which will be moving us back to the east coast in the near future. My hubby is disabled and helps out around the house as best he can...my youngest son recently moved back home with us and is working on his degree in culinary arts. He has been a cook for 6 years and currently works at Chili's Rest. and is working his way into the management end of the restaurant business, not to shabby for a 20 year old...my oldest son 22 years old still trying to find himself  . On my days off I try to fit in housework but my orchids need the attention, guess which wins...

I guess first off I am a full time homeschooling mom  Second I grow Orchids and have a retail shop together with Kris. I have a "hands on" experience in Horticulture. Started as manual labour in a greenhouse and worked my way up to assistant grower taking some courses along the way. So my knowledge is more practical than theoretical My goal is to complete eventually a Hort. program and get some papers to brandish:biggrin: plus I'd like to get a master gardeners Cert. I am hoping to expand into a full nursery of unique plants and I love making Hanging baskets and planter pots so that is one of my goals this year

Plus for those of you with horticultural degrees, is that BA, BS, MA, or PhD? Sorry to be so snoopy. :blushing: You all have such cool jobs. |
Hey Wendy...great thread!!!
Thanks :D |
Todd is that Philadelphus lewisii 'Blizzard' or 'Waterton'? I was just reading an article in Alberta Gardener about it, looks like massive blooms and intensely fragrant.

Dave, our Philadelphus has Blizzard as one of the parents but P. delavayi ssp. melanocalyx is the other. the flowers are quite large, fragarnt and the new leaves are purplish! Matches the purple calyx that contrasts so strongly with the white flowers.
|
That will help to give the plant more foliage interest, isn't that the big comment about Philadelphus - when not in flower it is nothing special to look at.
How is it hardiness rating - good for zone 3??? :) |
