And then when I look at the pond as in picture #1 I get depressed and have to back to the computer and bring up picture #2, it's kind of like a fix you know what I'm talking about. Jim.

I guess we just
pass it on to someone else. We certainly don't have a choice.

Wow, Jim! What an amazing pond you have there! Do you have fish in there and where do you store them in winter if you do? Oh oh oh, that last pic made my day! Thanks!

All I need is a day where the temps go into the 20s and I can get back in. I checked and watered everything Tuesday and now I'm waiting to get back in. Hopefully it will be today, tomorrow at the latest. At some point I need a fix to this problem. The last several winters have been mild and I didn't really think this was going to be a long term problem but with how cold this winter has been I guess I better make some mods this summer so this doesn't happen anymore. Makes me a little nervous.

I don't blame you for being nervous! I guess this is the winter we all learn the "what works and what doesn't" in wintering orchids.

Well it didn't get warm enough today. Didn't get as warm as the weather man promised. If tomorrow doesn't get warm enough I guess I'll borrow the wife's blow dryer and see if I can thaw my way in. The Phals will need watered by Monday and they are all in bud.

Bill, when locks and hardware freeze, a spray bottle with isopropyl rubbing alcohol in it works wonders. The alcohol gets in to all the small spaces and thaws the ice in no time at all (it will also force out any water helping it to dry), you may have to spray a couple of times, but it absolutely works.

Wow, I guess we're just so lucky here in Cali. Temperature was in the mid 80's all week last week.

Mirranova, thanks for the suggestion. I was going to try it when I realized all my spray bottles are stored in the greenhouse. On the bright side it has warmed up to 30 here and I can now get into the greenhouse. And to my suprise 3 new orchids opened their buds so they came into the house today, along with an empty spray bottle. I'm sure I'll get to try the alcohol later this week.
Bill
