Do we need permission to post a link on our website to another? Say, AOS, vendors, or hubs like the orchidweb?
We are trying to get a local society off the ground and I stepped up to do a website. Of course the best way to cover up the fact that I suck at designing websites is by posting a bunch of cool links! Is this illegal or bad netiquette?
I'm not sure what the specifics would be but I'm sure folks would allow you to link to their sites if you just asked. I think it would just be the courteous thing to do.
When I was a member of our local club, I set this up for us. As with the majority of clubs, not many people used the option but it's a great way for club members to connect in between meetings.
Most sites will love the fact that you will link to them. The more 'credible' sites that link to a particular site, the higher they tend to rank in search engines. You don't need permission to list links. You may however want to send their webmaster an email saying that you are linking to them and ask (if you like) if they would consider also adding a link to your new site in their links section.
No permission is needed. In fact, it benefits the website that you are linking to. The more links they have 'pointing' to their website, the higher they show up in Google search results for relevant search terms.
