Talking My New Kitchen Floor!

We finished installing our new floor on Saturday. I had come down with a bug of some sort, and was running a mild fever, but I wanted it DONE! It took us two days. I did the lion's share of the work since hubby dearest had back surgery last April and is nowhere near recovery (and probably won't ever be, but that's another story!).

Anyhow, we have a very old house, and the kitchen had numerous layers of old flooring, most of which was impossible to get out without costly removals down to the subfloor. This made picking flooring tricky. Tile needs to be level, and that was going to cost us big time because of the size of the kitchen, so that got ruled out although I wanted is so badly. We ended up with a wood laminate tile that looks just like regular tile. It is a "floating floor" meaning that there is a layer of insulation/padding under it that eliminated the need to completely remove the old flooring. The stuff is super thick and looks great!

I just had to yell to the -orchid- world how thrilled I am to have a real floor again!

I now realize I should have taken a picture or two to post with this... but our cabinet are still primer colored awaiting paint.

Sounds fantastic! Ours is fired clay tile over plywood. I can imagine how yours looks. Sounds great!

Congrats on the new floor. I do a lot of that type of work. But mostly the wood laminate are not tile shape they are more like wood planks that snap together. The under pad is more for moisture blocking and sound deadening. Just finished doing 1200 sq. ft. of natural stone tile floors and two bathrooms. Would love to see what it looks like when your done.

Ross - Fired Clay, that sounds really cool. I'll bet it's beautiful.

Dave - Yeah, my husband was a contractor but hasn't been able to work since his surgery. After considering about every option out there, this was one of the cheaper, and easier ones. Yes, the padding is for moisture barrier too. Our tiles are 18" square tiles, but they do fit together with tongue and groove.

Well Nichole congratulation for your new floor. Waiting to see the pics if possible. Besides, I am so sorry to hear from you on your husband surgery and that he could work no more.

Happy days - we did renovations in our kitchen and utility between Christmas and new year new sinks in both, repositioning the dishwasher and new cupboards in the utility - I love home improvements but I love it when they are finished even more
Well done on laying the floor - and I hope your husband wasn't a back seat driver it being his job and all before the surgery! I also hope he recovers as quickly as possible. Good health and happy kitchens

Best wishes

Heather
