His Last Words to Me
My nephew called to wish me a happy birthday right before Christmas. To tell you the truth, I was a tiny bit irritated at the interruption.
It's basketball season and the Razorbacks were on TV and everyone knows not to call during a game!!
Still, I thought it was so sweet for him to remember. Sean is my older sister's son, raised with my son. They live just down the road from us.
30 years old, unmarried and living alone in another state he sounded a bit lonely and so we talked for quite a while.
He told me he was getting a really sore throat and hoped he wasn't going to be too sick to make the drive home for Christmas.
The last thing he said to me that night was, "I Love You, Aunt Debby." I told him I loved him, too and we hung up.
It turned out Sean had strep throat and decided to stay home for Christmas but he was planning to make the trip before New Year's.
He never made it. He died in his bed Christmas Day. Those last words will have to last an eternity.

I don't know how I missed this one... I'm so sorry to hear about your loss
I always say "I love you," and this is a perfect example of why it's so important. I'm glad you were able to have a nice conversation with him. My condolences to you and your family. |
