You know what's truly funny? I was at a retirement party just last week and there was a Law Enforcement (Narc) guy there that specializes in catching folks who grow (shall we say) "tomatoe plants" indoors. I was describing my new ventures to another person in front of him (keep in mind I know this guy really well and for a long time) and I said I had just installed this system to grow Pot. Oops, I said, I mean Tomatoes! This guy just smiled (he rarely cracks a smile - those guys don't). Then he engages me in a discussion of the type of lights, the way I was growing, etc. I wasn't scared, but I knew he was just checking. I just told him: If I were into pot I would get a HID light, I wouldn't mess around. Besides (I say to him) salad greens cost more than pot nowadays!

So that's what my brother was using those lights for, way back then.
Ross, I understand your excitement. Please update with progress reports, I'm most interested to see how this all turns out for you.
And speaking of tomatoes, my girlfriend has a vegetable garden (outside) where, she picks all her veggies and herbs for the family meals. Her doggie (gone, now) loved the tomatoes and used to eat them right off the vines, the little stinker. So there's something to be said about growing indoors vs. outdoors.
Enjoy your new hobby!

Actually it's part of a very old hobby dating back to 1960s. I have gardened to produce fresh stuff since then. I have had a greenhouse which flopped, I have had gardens that produced like gang-busters, I have tried under HID lights to start tomatoe plants and that flopped, now I have this idea that I can pull this off. Why do I have this idea? Maybe it's just male guts. Who knows. But I just have to try. If all else fails, guess what will grow under these lights? Orchids. That's what. And you can bank that statement!

I tried painting for a while, but never psychodelic stuff... just boring natural stuff. I thought of mushrooms for a while, but thought the spores would get loose and get me in trouble Jimmy Hendrix "Purple Haze".

Sounds like a great idea! Let us know how it turns out. I tried an indoor herb garden once, but I made the mistake of buying live plants from a local grocery store. One of them one infested with aphids, and the disgusting things killed all my basil and parsly. They didn't seem to like the mint.
