Ross, I will have to go to the Alps for you this year

Basel is in a very privileged position and we have very mild weather here, not to hot in summer (well, sometimes it becomes VERY hot, but it does not lats too long) and also not very cold winters (normally snow does not last longer than two days ) The problem is that it rains a lot! and changes a lot, so that suddenly you are freezing your a... and one week later you are sitting outside in t-shirts e.g. two weeks ago, I was wearing winter clothes, last weekend I was doing some trekking in t-shirt I would prefer colder winters, in the -5°C to -10°C , then it would be cold but dry, and that's easier to deal with

...and if you go a bit to the south (Ticino) you even have palm trees growing around the lakes

Man, that sucks! (sorry ) Palm trees!? Thought your latitude was right up there near 45 degrees?

yes, but there is a "funny" current of warmer and drier air coming from the mediterranean that for some reason makes it up to Basel, Elsass region

The palm trees grows in Ticino (called the Florida from Switzerland) the lakes (Lugano and Lago Maggiore) are kind of deep in the valleys and receive also some dry warm weather from the south... two weekends ago, when I went to the Locarno Orchids show, we had 28°C there
