Lemon tree pruning questions
I have a few questions for those of you who have experience with growing lemons. What's the best time of year to prune them? Can they be pruned hard, or do they react badly to that? And lastly, can their soil dry out somewhat during the winter?
This past spring I got rather ambitious (as is usual for that time of year) and bought a Meyer lemon tree from a local nursery. It's in a large pot, and the tree is approximately six feet tall (measured from the base of the trunk to the top of the canopy). It's grown very well on my south-facing deck over the summer and already has lots of little lemons on it. But now, with fall fast approaching, I need to bring it inside. While I do have a large sunroom where it will spend the winter, I would really like to cut it back some in order to save space. I don't want to do that, however, if it turns out that lemons in general (or this type in particular) are finicky about when they're pruned and how hard they're pruned. Any advice I receive will be greatly welcome. Thank you!
