bonsai thread!

I got a small elephant bush for use in a succulent dish garden, and then read that they get big but you can use them for bonsai and keep them small. So I thought it would be cool to give that a shot, and I got another elephant bush that looked more tree-like, and it turns out that one was actually 7 plants.

For lack of anything else to use (I couldn't find the pots I was looking for), I planted them in some of those clear plastic saucers (after poking drainage holes, of course).





They're held together with wire and have a bunch of gravel piled on in an attempt to make them stand up. Hopefully they'll get better at it when the roots establish.

Try hitting thrift stores like GoodWill, and Salvation Army. Sometimes you get lucky and either find good/unusual pots or bowls/dishes that can be drilled to be made into pots.

Little bit of newbie love for the Bonsai thread here.
Do dwarfs count? I've got a wonderful little Ficus that I bought as a teeny thing with the intention of trying my hand at creating a bonsai, that didn't happen but I did manage an awesome dwarf lol

I have several Ficus that I'm training for bonsai.
A few are ready to be placed in a dish.

Paul is right about hitting some thrift stores. I've located several bowls and containers that I (still) need to drill. These will make great dishes for some of my bonsai trees...once I finally get (completely) moved.

The last post is so old I don't know is this will be reed by anyone. Anyways, I have a bonsai that my husband gave me to make me get into something else besides orchids, ...not a good idea 💡....,as you can see, I've almost kill it.

If this can be safe ...could anyone give some advice??. It is a Japanese Quince

On most trees, once the bark is stripped all the way around the trunk, it will die. Sorry I don't have better information.

note- i have one bonsai and i bought it not made it-

i am not an expert

if i had a tree with a fully removed section like that i would treat it as if i were doing an air layer and wrap it in sphag and then seat it with plastic wrap. the hope it that it will root from there and then you can just mound up the dirt

i would also be concerned that it will die as it sits

Agreed! How did that big scalp of bark at base of trunk occur? I'm with DC as to pretending you're air layering in order to attempt salvage. But how long has the bark been scalped away?

I told my husband ...please no more attempt to keep me away from the Orchids! I'll kill anything else.
