Default Dragonfly

I couldn't help but notice this big dragonfly perched on a cattleya as I was watering my plants this morning. He didn't seem to mind the photo shoot.

We have some property east of here in Lake Wales and I have noticed many different dragon flies around the pond. One is a bright purple which I'd never seen before. I recently read that they eat mosquitos which is a very good thing!

Nice picture Junebug,
It look like the Twilight Darner (Gynacantha nervosa), common in FL. It likes to spend the day hanging in shady forest undergrowth (in this case your Cattleya...) and go out hunting before night.
This is indeed a major predator of mosquitoes...

One of the things I love about living here in Fla. are the dragonfly residents!
