Default Mounting a Staghorn Fern

This is in reference to the Staghorn I bought for my brother - Staghorn Fern
He recently asking me how to mount this little baby (type of medium - sphag moss? coconut coir fiber?; attaching devices - old pantyhose, wire? ) ..
I have seen them in baskets and upright wooden slated mounts .. What is your experience and what do you think is best ? I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice on this
Thank you!

I recently was given a small staghorn plant also. It's in a 2" plastic pot with what looks like soil. Guess I should be paying attention to this post, huh? Can they grow in soil? It looks fine. But I've only had it a couple weeks. I killed my first one, so I do need help.

Hi D and Kiki, I would start it off in a basket and hang it from a tree. As it get bigger you can get heavier chain and make a craddle with it. Does it need to be moved indoors during the winter? They can get quit big and heavy which will make it a challange to move. I don't need to move mine and it is attached to my Avocado tree. Does anyone need any Avocados? I'm over run with them this year.

? I can't help much, the only mounted ones I have seen were at a local college who was selling them. They cut three 2*4*12 lenghths of lumber and drilled a hole through the side of each then wired them with heavy gauge steel and attached the fern with a tiny bit of moss, spag I believe, and let them hang in a green house for a year before they sold them.

Dave, how fast do these guys grow? I need mine to be indoors. And when I take it out of the 2" pot, do I use spagham moss? I need to put it into a pot of some type. I can't be watering everyday and I'm hoping I can water it like I would any houseplant. Am I way off base?

I was figuring that coconut fiber maybe better as it won't break down as readily as sphag moss will .. any comments on this ..
My brother is keeping his indoors and from the photos of the past thread I posted, it's still on the small size .. (4" pot) though I know they can become quite big.
He does have some trees he could hang them in over the summer but I don't know if he wants to do that now since summer is ending ..

Dorothy, I am totally amazed you didn't have the old threads listed There was one about a year ago asking essentially the same question and ended with photos (as I recall.) Here let me look it up for you.

Here they are:

I'm not a expert with these guy but I can tell you that they don't that grow that fast. Mine is grow with no medium at all. I fert. it when I do all my plants outside (when I can remember really). I give mine bannana peels a few times a year. I just lay them on the top and tuck them in behind the big round leaf where the roots are.

Yes Ross you did it right -
I was looking to see if anyone else who hadn't participated in those threads might have anything to add ..
I didn't expect you to repeat what you already told me or go through the trouble of searching through past threads
but I endearingly thank you Ross ..
