Smile Boldt's Castle

I spent this past weekend at a wedding at the Boldt Castle in Alexandria Bay, NY it was beautiful. If anyone is in the upper western region of New York State, it's worth seeing this incredible place!

Question

Dorothy, I remember that Castle its on the St. Lawrence Seaway right? Its the one on Heart Island. I used to live in Carthage, NY north of Watertown. I love the Thousand Islands. A gentleman built it for his wife but she passed away before he finished it. He did not finish it and now its a State Park or something like that.

Beautiful castle you must've loved it. A little bit sad history with the wife dying...did they have any orchids?

Yes, Sheridan - after she passed away, he never returned and it was left incomplete .. it's an amazing place!
The history is bittersweet and the renovations they have done create a feeling of being back in the early 1900's. I love the Thousand Island region .. the water is soo crystal clear and clean and the fish are huge .. I saw a number of carp in the shallows .. A beautiful region of New York .. it's funny how people consider New York for the city alone and it's a large state with a lot of individual beauty all it's own .. I regretting returning to Long Island with all it's traffic and congestion after being surrounded by all that open land and clean air!

No orchids - Swamper but the grounds are beautifully manicured .. They could use a few good orchids
Oh I did love it! and hope to return again someday

Cool

Dorothy, my other favorite place it Sackets Harbor where the US fought the Brits during the War of 1812. Great Barracks and the homes most all date back to that time. Our house in Carthage was built in 1890. Not quite that old but old enough. The only thing I didn't like about living in Northern NY was the very very humid summers and the misquitos big enough to carry off your little children

Hi Dorothy,
I've been to Heart Island a number of times, had to keep going back to Boldt Castle just to walk the grounds and absorb the history. Such a sad story, you can almost feel Mr. Boldt's presence.
If I remember correctly it was to have 365 rooms, one for every day of the year. Seems I remember that Mrs. Boldt never got to see it as Mr. Boldt was having it built as a surprise gift.
Glad you had a chance to visit it, you will never forget it.
