That's the site I use whether there's a hurricane coming or not
Very specific information for individual locations.

I am also signed up on this site:
Emergency Email . . . . The Emergency Email Network ®. . . . . . . . . . . . NOW INCLUDED WITH Emergency Notification the business continuity and disaster recovery resource on the web.

You put in your location and they send you a notice for emergencies occurring in your area.

We have other threads on Florida weather too:

For those of you who have never taken a hit from a hurricane I can only emphasize to start your prep work soon. Stock up on ice, batteries, non perishable food items, gas up your cars, get your prescriptions refilled, charge up your cell phones or better yet get a battery operated charger, food for your pets, put away anything in your yard that can blow around and bash into your or your neighbors home. Consider getting your important papers together in case you have to evacuate. Once the hurricane and the power is knocked out there will be nothing open. Roads will be blocked by trees and vegetation, traffic lights will not be working and it can get pretty darn chaotic. You may be ordered to stay in your homes in the aftermath. You may be ordered not to enter your home if you evacuated until it's been saftey checked. This was the case on Fort Myers Beach, Captiva and Sanibel Islands. It will be hot with no air conditioning! Fill your bathtubs up with water for bathing and to flush your toilets. Day 2 Publix and Wallmart will be open in limited areas with their generators booming for power. The shelves will be mostly empty due to the rush on items before the hurricane and due to the fact that deliveries will be delayed til the roads are cleared. Ice and cold water are non existent if you didn't prepare to stockpile your own until the Red Cross moves in...after the roads are cleared.
Mother Nature blew my pool cage and screening into my pool along with shrubs, dirt, debris and dead birds. I watched a mature coconut palm snap in two in my front yard and Charley defoliated every growing thing in my yard. We had some water damage and one of the hurricane shutters caved in a bit from the 150 mph winds. Storm bands continued to spin off Charley after the hurricane hit. Can I just say that we were one of the VERY lucky ones. People had tears in their eyes when the National Guard trucks moved in to help with clean up. Neighbors helped one another but there are always the morons with criminal intent taking advantage of a bad situation. Scam artists move in and prey on vulnerable people who have home damage promising repairs.
Kids lets pray that Fay goes away!

So scary...but at least we've got a warning and can make some plans.

I'm sorry to hear you have first-hand experience...but I'm very happy that you and yours survived and are well.

I'm hoping with all my heart that it turns out to be just a storm and that it has lower wind speeds. I cleared out around the pool today...if the storm doesn't turn out to be too bad, all is not lost...it'll be the perfect time for hubby to powerwash the lanai decking

Stay aware...and stay safe

Sue, Me thinks you may get your deck powerwashed one way or the other. Let's hope the job goes to your hubby.

Yes, all we can do is keep an eye on things and make plans. As long as we can keep our chids from blowing around we are one step ahead of the game!

Thanks for the link Sue. I just bookmarked it and signed up. We don't get many emergencies up here, but any is too many (hey, that rhimes!) My Dad and Sister and cousins are all in the Tampa Bay area and I will monitor this closely. My Sis is on St. George Island with friends and husband right now and that is estimated to be the "cone".

It's a good site for anybody to have, not just for weather warnings.

I hope your family stays safe here

It passed through the island as a tropical depression and it rained like crazy were I live. The winds broke some big trees and it's still nothing compared to what it is now.
PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELVES AND BE SAFE!!!
