Yup. I planted a dwarf Puerto Rican Plantain, one Mysore Banana, and two Dwarf Cavendish Banana trees in early May. They were planted with good drainage (lava rock) and, up until now, have been growing well and some had reached the top of the fence.
This a.m. they are standing in several inches of water and the one banana tree along with her pup have blown to the side again. The wind and rain have not let up. There are catfish swimming in the yard I'm losing soffit and fascia this morning. The storm is expected to sit on top of us for the next several hours.

I don't have ideas for how to rescue them. However, if you replant, try raised beds. Works around here. We have sticky clay soil that drains poorly. My whole veggie garden is raised. Hmmm. Since they were planted fairly recently, perhaps you could dig them up again? You may not want to be out in your weather. I don't know.

The increase in intensity has happened before, with Irene. They never factor in the warm waters of the Everglades helping to intensify hurricanes. Most of the time hurricanes go over dry land, which does weaken hurricanes, but so far, every time it goes over the Everglades, it intensifies.

I grow in a fiberglass greenhouse that survived Charlie. I had a lot of plants outside though and I had to take about fifty inside the greenhouse along with all of the bugs that were probably hiding in them. Fortunately we were spared from any bad weather. When you live on the cusp of tropical it's so easy to try growing plants outside but just be reminded that having to take plants in during inclement weather is part of the process.

Fay came and went from my area. GOOD BYE FAY & GET OUT OF FLORIDA! Lots of rain Monday into Tuesday. The nasty wind stayed till last night sometime.
My chids all are fine. Tucked them out of any wind and on the ground or bunged them on the tables. Sure hope the vandas liked the soaking. Stay safe everyone.

When we have these storms like this I have a big concern about the loss of power for several days and what would happen to my orchids in the greenhouse without the fans moving and cooling the air. It usually tops out about 90 to 92 degrees and I suspect without fans it would easily surpass 100. The only thing I can think of would be to put one of those blue tarps over the top to block the sun. I am quite open to suggestions if anyone has some. Luckily I have never had a previous power loss that lasted more than a few minutes.

Melbourne, FL update. Increased rain and more gusty winds which have changed their direction and are pounding the W. side of the house. It's pretty impossible to travel by car. There are many flooded roads and police blockades. My husband traveled a short distance to a nearby convenience store. He took note of the local golf course which is entirely under water.
My little Mango and Avocado trees are still hanging on. Thank God for panty hose plant ties. The Bouganvilla is pretty contorted and the Mexican Petunias are a mess. My Plantain is tilted. Two Banana trees still look o.k. After the rain subsides I'll probably dig up the damaged Banana trees...let them dry out a bit...replant, cross my fingers, and pray.
Prior to the storm we made reservations beginning this Friday for a one night stay in Sarasota and a 4 night stay on Captiva Island near Fort Myers. Are any OB members familiar with the weather conditions around these locations? We're trying to determine if the trip is still a possibility.
