Beautiful Hawk posing for pics!
Today (on the way home from orchid shopping) I saw this beautiful hawk on the powerline. He was nice enough to sit still so I could creep up and get his picture. I got about 10 mosquito bites walking through the tall grass to get close enough . At one point a stupid dove landed on the wire very close to him. Luckily for her, he didn't seem too hungry! The pictures don't do him justise. Very beautiful bird!

We had a baby hawk hatch in a tree next door last year. Every day, the baby and mommy would come over to a large tree in my yard for lunch. Yucky to watch...yet couldn't take my eyes off of them!
Thanks for posting the pics, they're great!

He's gorgeous. A few years ago (before I had my digital camera) I spotted a bald eagle directly across the street in a neighbors front yard. I'd never seen one close up before and he was spectacular. He tolerated the spectators attentions for a bit, but then flew off. Apparently he'd dropped his prey (a possom) who was lying beneath the neighbor's Bird of Paradise. The possom was still alive so I called an animal rescue service to come and retrieve him.

My DH and I think it is probably a Cooper's Hawk. The dove is a Eurasian Collared Dove. I don't know eastern birds at all really. Could easily be all wet. It wouldn't be the first time. Cool picture and what determination crawling thru the mosquito laden grasses! You sneak up on orchids too?

maybe a red shouldered hawk? I was surprised yesterday SUnday, to see one in my friends yard on a powerline too. Not very common to see these hawks, at least not as common as the dove

Nice hawks. I just spent a week in Florida, and was wanting to know what kind of dove those were. Thanks for the name. Also saw lots of vultures. Big birds those are.
