Default A worthwhile rescue effort.

This area of North Carolina is the fastest growing in the state and with that comes the need for highway improvements. We are currently in the middle of a 5-year project to build overpasses on each of the two roads that come to the island and doubling the road into town to 4 lanes.

For the last several years, while driving into Southport, I saw these reddish flowers growing on the roadside as I sped by. It turned out they were Byzantine gladiolus plants. Last spring, as they were about to be bulldozed, I grabbed a shovel and a bucket and dug up the bulbs, transplanting them to my yard, where they are in-bloom right now.

Great save and will make your garden a showcase. Things of various importance always suffer due to "progress". Keep looking for more treasure.

These are very easy from seed and begin flowering in 2-3 years.
