Hello friends!

I recently got a young Rohdea japonica from Satomi at Seed Engei. The Japanese call them "omoto".

I assume I'm not the only fan of plants from and popular in East Asia, so I was curious if anyone else here grows them. I've heard they're pretty tough plants.

I got a reply from Satomi about a few questions about the culture for these plants:

Quote:
Hi Alec

When I talked to grower in Japan, he said
- Use any kind of granule media (like bonsai mix, kanuma, akadama, cactus mix should work too) and put moss only on top (it was not tight but loosely)
- Direct light for two hours in the morning (I am not sure if this works in US. In CA it would burn)
- Fertilizer is required from spring to early summer. Very small amount 20ppm 3-4 times a week
- 60-70% shade
- spray for bugs

No dormancy
The difference was variegation, leaf shape and texture of the leaves.

I don't have any, but it's apparently used in landscapes here.
