Selenicereus chrysocardium Male
Default Selenicereus chrysocardium

AKA Epiphyllum chrysocardium. Photos showing the spiny ovary, which is one of the reasons this was moved from Epiphyllum to Selenicereus.

It's a little too cold in winter here in coastal Southern California for this plant. It looks badly beaten up in Spring, and there is considerable dieback of stems. But it does flower when large enough.

Selenicereus = Moon Cereus (candle)
chrysocardium = golden heart

I am away from my desktop. It will be a while before I can rotate the images properly.

Blanco is a 4-year-old Giant Schnauzer I began fostering 3 weeks ago. He weighs 95 pounds / 43kg. He got his name, which means "white", because he was the only puppy in his litter having a few white hairs scattered in the shiny black coat. He's sitting under the basket with the Selenicereus. There is a standard 1 quart/liter spray bottle for scale.

What a beautiful boy! I'd be tempted to adopt. I have a real issue with fostering dogs... it's how I end up with more dog than I should.

I've been looking for another Giant since Monster and Miracle passed away. There's a good chance I'll keep Blanco. Four years with no training and no manners means a very big job, though.

People say about Giant Schnauzers: It's not a dog, it's an adventure!

I fostered/adopted a Silky Terrier a long way back. Murphy had spent four-plus years mostly in a plastic kennel at a veterinarian's office. His original owner had some severe mental health issues, and she boarded him there. You can imagine the tough row I had to hoe with that dog.

Started out terrified of grass, people, and not potty trained. He became one of the pack here, and spent his life rooting his snout through the dirt, hiding his bones and treats, and digging for an occasional mole. It was so rewarding to see him go from a recluse to a brave little terrier. You know it's worth it and know he deserves it.
