That's odd, DC. Mine are all about the same size or a little smaller as what's shown in the video. And alas, only a couple still hanging around now... south they go!

I think they are fattening up to get ready for the migration over the Gulf of Mexico. I read somewhere in the weeks before they double and triple their size in preparation.

I always mean to make it down to Rockport, Tx this time of year, but always forget. This video is Rockport, hummingbirds descend on this town on the coast by the thousands before taking off over the Gulf.

i have seen Caliopes down here which are teeeny and i believe i have seen bee hummers which are supposed to be only in cuba, but that's like 100 miles away so i believe i have. My parents are both avid birders and have rubbed a lot of the passion on to me. they are split about if what we saw was a bee hummer or a hummingbird moth.....i stand by my ID lol
but yeah, i see mostly little guys

I had to look up Calliope and bee hummers. Wow! Teeny tiny! And I'd say likely you have seen the bee hummers... 100 miles isn't much distance for any hummingbird. Learned something new today!

Had something like this happen to me years ago. I was working in one of my flower beds and heard a whirring noise behind my head. When I turned around to see what it was I had to back up to be able to recognize it as a hummingbird. They sure are noisy little buggers up close.

Ever had one run into ya? I was sitting on deck the other day and four hummers started dive bombing each other in an aerial display of territory. Got smacked right on the side of my forehead.

I am amazed that hummers are so combative.
You think "Aw, these cute litle birds".
Wrong!
I've seen one hummer take control of a feeder and knock others out of the air.
I ended up putting up multiple feeders and even then, one hummer set up zone defense and defended both of them, sitting between the feeders chasing them all away.

At my previous residence I had a hummingbird feeder with four feeding ports right outside one of the dining room windows. Many times there were 4-5 males so interested in keeping the others away that hardly anyone got anything from the feeder. It was almost comical to watch.
