Celebrate with me!!!
My research group just published our first article! It wouldn't be anything I would force anyone to read, but it will be coming out in a future edition of Physics Letters A and..... I am first author.... !!! It was accepted without revision, which I assume means that our use of the language was clear enough and our science was sound. Anyway, just another day in the life of a grad student. I will escape the hub bub and spend some time with the 'chids. I have been on a repotting tear...of course, it's a bit of a distraction from working on my research proposal , but at least it's productive, right??

Oh wow! CONGRATULATIONS!!! I hope I get to publish some day. But right now, it seems so far away.
Are you doing a PhD in Physics?

My language skills in French are probably good enough to get me beat up and my German...well, what German speaking skills??? There it is. Although, as an orchid grower, I have watched them recover from my attempts at waterboarding or imitating desert clims, so miracles do happen, right?

that's fine, you bring the orchids and give them to me as for language... don't panic... Basel is so international (thanks to Roche and Novartis ) that you really don't need german. French can help, but english is the most spoken language. I have many colleagues who only speak english and live here since years!!!
The weather in basel is very nice, and good for the orchids too
if you have the chance to come to Basel for a post doc.. . DO IT!!! a great experience
