Pings and nepenthes in "RJars"

For interests sake, here are the pings and nepenthes I have growing in "RJars". Not all the pings I have seem to like sphagnum but these are doing well!

Nepenthes Bloody Mary


Pinguicula Pirouette


Pinguicula Aphrodite

Your purple ping (Aphrodite) and Nepenthes are pretty cool. I admit, I bought my ping and Nepenthes just for bug control but after seeing your ping, I might need to get one just for the flowers.

Not going to get more Nepenthes. I heard that they can be very addicting and I tend to REALLY like collecting plants so that would be a slippery slope.

Mexican Pinguicula do best for me either mounted on limestone, or in a mix containing limestone. Warm temperate species from the SE US, such a primulaflora and planifolia like Sphagnum.

sunfire...this is such a lovely way to grow them. I have only 3 Nepenthes bought about 3 yrs ago growing in s/m in plastic pots. What's the coolest temp. they can take as I've got them outside now. Why the name"Rjar"? TY

RJSquirrel long ago described here his method of growing Masdies in a net pot that exactly fits the opening of a globular glass jar. I can't find the posts now searching. I think I have them bookmarked at home.

Edit: Here is one such post. The search must have been broken earlier because it kept returning "No threads found."

Hi. I wish I could answer your question but to be honest I just bought mine as a seedling to play around with. This one just sometimes lives on my windowsill and sometimes in my grow tent, depending on my whims and gnat levels... I don't put these jars outside since they are enclosed.

But yes, as EstacionSeca replied, the originator is RJSquirrel. It is a very old post but I happened upon it and it is now how I am growing my masdevallias.

Yes, the seller I bought from had them all growing in sphagnum so I just kept it going. Would you mind sharing with me your ping soil mix recipe? I have some that I would like to try in soil.

At some point I will probably move this nepenthes out to a hanging basket as it has really grown a lot from the seedling I started with.

My pings seem to always be sending up flowers which was a really pleasant surprise. I think they are such fun. unique little plants. I have a drosera that seems to do better than the pings catching gnats though, but that might also be due to placement...

Have you propagated them yet? It's very easy, all you need to do is to pull a whole leaf, getting it right at the crown. Stick that end in a continuously moist 50/50 mix of peat and sand and put it in a bright place, but not direct sun. They'll often form multiple plants from a single leaf.
