For my birthday next year I am planning a visit to Machu Picchu. Would like to stay in Inkaterra Pueblo Hotel -- with the orchid collection. Has anyone been there? Is it worth the cost? Thanks! ROBB

I have not been to the hotel but I have been to Machu Picchu and it is spectacular! Personally I stayed down in Aguas Calientes (the small town below) and there are plenty of nice places to stay for a much lower price. I'm sure inkktierra is really nice but I didn't spring for it.

There are orchids all around the area. The ones I recall being the most common were these:

Maxillaria gigantea- a huge maxillaria with small yellow flowers all along it's stem which looks like a angreacum and gets to about 6 feet long.

Sobralia dichotoma- as far as I know this is the tallest orchid. I meadured a long one with a rope and it' was 21 feet tall growing drom the ground up through a tree. It has really beautiful yellow white and purple flowers that look similar to a cattleya but only last a day or so.

Epidendrum secundum- super common all over. Trees rocks soil. It seems to grow everywhere. It's a tall plant to 4' or so with a spike about 2 more feet with a little ball of purple or pink flowers.

There is also tons of small pleurothallids that I don't presume to identify.

There is a small island of uncleared vegetation in the middle of the ruin which has some orchids inside including and Ida or lycaste.

It's been a longtime for me, I'm looking forward to seeing some photos!

Sorry to just start rattling off everything I remember. Hopefully it helps somehow!
