Default Sad News in the Hoya World

I heard some very sad news today. Ted Green, a legend in the Hoya hobby has passed away. Ted was directly responsible for the introduction of a significant portion of the Hoyas currently available in the hobby through his collection trips all over the South Pacific. He was a veritable walking encyclopedia for all things Hoya and many things orchid as well. He had a reputation for being a curmudgeon, but it stemmed mainly from people asking procedural and policy questions that his website clearly listed after an admonishment to read the procedures and policies before
ordering! Personally he was definitely my cup of tea, and we had a couple of highly entertaining email conversations about things Hoya and not. It would usually start out with my making an order, him not having most of it, and me saying here are my conditions, here's my budget, surprise me. And he always did. The world is a much less interesting place without him in it. And then just a few short hours after getting the news I took a close look at the Hoya ciliata I got in my last order with him 2 years ago and found it about to bloom for the first time. RIP good sir!

He spoke to our cactus society a few years back. He was very informative and an excellent speaker. He was among the first botanical explorers and introducers of Hoyas from southeast Asia and Oceania. I think he was well over 100 years old.

I wish I had the chance to meet him in person.
