Fried green tomatoes. Any good recipes?
I have a lot more tomatoes this year and I love fried green tomatoes. As a kid I loved them in the typical flour dredge but now I want to make them less bready.
Anyone have a nice spice mix they make?
Thanks!

Have you ever tried them in a stir fry? Delicious. I do an onion, sliced thin carrots, thin green tomato wedges, and small chicken and/or shrimp pieces. Greek seasoning and tamari. When almost done put in slices of ripe tomato. Serve over brown rice.
Dip in egg, then panko bread crumbs with a little cornmeal mixed in, and fry. For that fried effect with less breading.

Or look up any Hispanic style recipe that uses tomatillos and substitute green tomatoes.

Make sure green tomatoes are cooked through and a bit smushy if stir frying. Makes one ill if it isn't cooked through.

Husband says his nana used to make green tomato pickles and they were da bomb. Didn't have her recipe. But I sorted through some online and he said this is very similar to the one his nana made. Italy’s secret condiment: Pickled Green Tomatoes – Carla Azevedo
Imma try it this summer!

What about the green tomatoes making you sick if not fully cooked? Or does the pickling take care of that?

Hmmm. Good question. I don’t actually know. I’ve eaten them though.

i was talking with my dad last night and he reminded me that green tomatoes are a staple in most delis in the NE. when you sit down you get a mixed plate of pickled things and there are carrots and green tomatoes in all of them.
they are often vinegary and spicy

Right... same thing here in my neck of the woods. It must be the pickling that takes care of the toxin in them. My grandma used to make picalilli (sp?) and it was just pickled as well. Not canned either. Just kept in the fridge.

I found this online. Haven't tried it but it sure sounds good. The extra crunch of the cornmeal sounds good.
Yummly - Uh oh!
Called "Zesty Fried Green Tomatoes"
