Figs!
Default Figs!

I decided to dive right into fig growing after having my first truly ripe fig from a tree late in the fall. Would love to hear experiences from my smart friends on this forum.

Here are the varieties I have so far (yes I am going overboard as I always do):

Negronne
Ronde de Bordeaux
Latturula
Peter's Honey
St. Rita
Smith
Imp Brown Turkey
Italian 258
Neverella
Celeste

Do you live where you can grow them outside?

I have grown Ischia (green) and brown turkey. Love them both. The green are better raw and with cheese. Brown for preserves and raw and cooking

I do! Approx 250 frost free days and a warm fall. We've only had <5 frosts this whole winter. Still, not quite as good as California but better than the NE and midwest

I love these type of posts, you have so much choice where you live. If I buy a fig, I buy 'a FIG', no variety names, no info. Same for orange, lemon, lime etc.
Whatever my fig is, it has lots of great fruit - does the job for me!

Just realised, all my fruit is NOID, just like my only orchids, mass market Phals

Enjoy - good luck with the growing, hope you get good fruiting.

Thanks!

You could probably make worthwhile profit just calling your fig 'Fuerteventura Black' (or whatever color it is) and selling 6" cuttings.

I have read that figs have a huge variety of flavors so I'm about to find out

well I know my figs taste beautiful, straight off the tree when warmed by the sun, I just split open and eat. Have to remember to only eat a couple at a time or I'm running indoors all day
Last year I had a hedgehog eat all of the lower fruit! They kept disappearing, didn't look like birds as every bit was gone, no skins left etc. Crept out with torch one night and found hedgehog up on hind legs in the base of the fig tree!!

I planted a Conadria 35 years ago. It's a great green fig for low deserts, where many types of fig fruit rot in the heat. Birds figured out those green things are edible so I don't get many.

We have 2 figs. Black Genoa and White Genoa.
Both in pots and were growing well. This year, not sure which as the labels have gone, is growing well with lots of fruit. The other has only 1 fruit and the leaves are looking spotty. Hubby has treated it with something, so its a case of wait and see.

So they seem to be more like a shrub than a tree, or are these just small?
