Swimming Pool v Yucca - the Yucca won!

I look after a friend's property (holiday home), basic maintenance and the swimming pool, when they are not in residence.
The swimming pool is lined with tiny mosaic tiles - a blooming nuisance to clean (not my choice at all!). Earlier in the summer a few tiles started to fall off underwater. Then tiny little roots started appearing in clumps. There were no plants in the garden nearer than 5m. Long story short within 3 months the pool was in such bad condition the owners decided to have the tiles removed and go with fibreglass instead.
So, with the Pool company in starting their work I went in for the day with my Majorero heavy work helper and we started digging around the outside of the pool terrace to see what we could find.
The culprit was a Yucca tree that was about 8m from the end of the pool!
It took the 2 of us all day to cut the tree down, chop out the main roots and then pull up as many of the smaller roots as possible that went all over the garden! And then get rid of it all. Lots of cuts and scratches along the way despite long protective gloves and trousers.

Be careful what you plant in sight of a pool!

That's like 25 feet! I had no idea a yucca would seek out water like that. Many years ago, I was sure I had a leak in one of the water features I had up close to the house. It was a 100 gallon horse trough I'd buried, covered with expanded metal, and put cobble all over the top. Had a "geyser" shooting up in middle, and I'd tell folks it was a natural spring. (Yes, some folks believed it.)

About ten feet away was a little clump of river birch I'd planted. Which was growing really, really fast. Figured out when tearing apart the feature to "find the leak" that it had grown roots over and up into the trough below the cobble. It had filled almost the entire container with roots. Why the pump hadn't failed yet, I have no idea, but it was quite the impressive stealth mode for that tree.

PS I thought Majerero was a type of goat cheese. You call your heavy worker pal Goat Cheese? Or possibly there's some other use of that word I've not heard of...

Majorero actually means 'of Fuerteventura'.

Lots of products (well, a few, we don't produce much ), including goat's cheese are given the name.

We take it as a big compliment when the locals call us Majorero - we know we are accepted!

My helper is called Beni - for more mature English members, think Benny from Crossroads, he's lovely but a bit simple (in the nicest possible way).

Gracias! I figured it was a localized idiom. Now I know. And that’s quite delightful. Truly knew no one was calling a friend and worker Goat Cheese, which was my sole reference.
