Earthquakes are cool! I was in the last one that occured off Waikeloa Hawaii in 2006. Shook and swayed the chandeliers. That was even bigger than the two that preceeded it, but still closed the roads around the Big Island.

lol I was actually woken up from bed for that one and I live in Oahu (approximately 500 miles away)!! I was half alseep and I thought that we were having a landslide (we live on a fairly steep incline) and I jumped out of bed and told my girlfriend "we gotta go!!" She just looked at me standing by the closet and told me to chill out. Im glad I didnt go running out into the street in just my skivvies!! Anyway, when I lived in Kona (2004-2006) I was always asleep for the quakes so the one that happened off of Waikoloa was my "first." It was kind of exciting though!! They estimated that Oahu (where I live) reached a five point something as well (the epicenter was just off the Kona coast of the Big Island and was a 6.7 with a 6.0, 7 minutes later!). Im glad that no one in the midwest was hurt!! EQ's can be pretty exciting!!

Its been nice here and we had the windows open, when we heard a rumble off to the west, and thought it was a train. But as it got louder and closer, there was no train horn along with it. Then the house shook. We first thought it was a mine blast, we hear/feel them occasionally, but then it shook again stronger and was ramping up in intensity when we finally figured out what it was and jumped out of bed till it was over.

It knocked several of my orchids out of window sills and a few top-heavy ones off my coffee table, scattering potting mix everywhere. It skewed pictures on the walls, and scooted lightweight stuff on our tables, moved some glassware towards the front of cabinets as well.

Since we were just getting to bed at 4:40am when the first one hit, I was wide awake for hours feeling the little aftershocks. Then I decided they were calm enough I could sleep through it and settled down on the couch in the living room and not even 15 mins after I'd fallen asleep a 4.5 "aftershock" hit and woke me straight up. I was able to finally get some sleep this afternoon though.

That must have been nerve-wracking! For all the mess you had to cleanup, at least it wasn't too bad, I guess. I'm happy to hear you and yours are okay
