life (or gardening) hacks and great ideas
Default

this is a good topic. I'd love to see more.
my latest hack has been revolving around recycling what others are throwing out. It is ridiculous how much home improvements are going on during the pandemic and as a result lots and lots of wood getting thrown out. I managed to gather 7 pallets within a 1 mile radius to make a new chicken coop.

The hacks I am most proud of are the little things in life that you just cannot show with a picture. Like the fact that my dog loves chasing things but he knows my chickens are out of bounds. He'd still chase them if he got the chance but he doesn't bother them cause he has been trained not to. I watched a lady with her ill behaved little things walking her dogs tonight and those dogs didn't shut up walking down the whole street once they spotted my dog. My dog just casually took a pee against a lamp post. Knowing your training paid off after years of it is a little hack.

Oh and my lawn. Thats right, there has always been a little unspoken rivalry between my neighbours and our lawns. I like the wildflower look, they like their wimbledon tennis court look. But I know from taking care of my lawn which is right next to their lawn that my lawn was full of moss and weeds a few years ago and I have been working on it a little every year and although I like the wild look I am going to surprise them with the best looking lawn this year. That will be a little bit of a hack. Their lawn is a mat of weeds by now and anyone who knows about lawns will know that weeds grow much much faster than grass so a mat of weeds that looks like a lawn needs to be cut 3 times more than a lawn made up of only grass. My hack is that hopefully I will after a good fertilizing achieve a nicer lawn that will need less yearly mowing.

Another good one in the kitchen I like is pineapple Ice popsicles. This is my own creation so I doubt you will be able to google it. Basically pineapple is a really healthy fruit that has anti-inflammatory properties and is really tasty but I can't eat a whole pineapple in one go and if you don't finish it the pineapple starts to go off.

So simple solution, chop the pineapple up into cubes, removing the peel and the heart and freeze the pineapple pieces on a chopping board for half an hour. They need to be frozen seperately like chips on an oven tray or they all stick together. After half an hour they can be combined into a tupperware for long term freezing and then can be eaten at any time as a refreshing fruit treat. They melt very fast and last for months in the freezer so a great way to eat more pineapple when the size might put you off buying a real pineapple compared to getting it canned all the time.
