Default Copiapoa talk for cactus lovers

Those of you who like cactus - the Cactus and Succulent Society of America has been holding bimonthly Zoom talks. Today's talk was on the cactus genus Copiapoa, endemic to Chile. It was presented by Stefan Burger, an Australian living in Chile.

Stefan will discuss the genus Copiapoa, its taxonomy, ecology, and conservation status. The in-situ conservation of cacti and succulent habitats globally has become of increasing concern, and Chilean cacti have unfortunately been the target of multiple, significant poaching events, and are also under threat from climate change and the expansion of civilization.

Stefan Burger is an Australian naturalist with a primary focus on cactus ecology and conservation. Stefan's interest in cacti and succulents began at a young age and motivated him to visit exotic plant habitats in Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Madagascar, the United States and Chile, where he is currently based. He now facilitates eco-tourism in South America and is researching Chilean cacti, with a focus on the genera Copiapoa and Eriosyce. Stefan lives in the city of Antofagasta with his wife Cinthia and three year old son, Nicholas.
