Some figs do need a cold period and lose their leaves during this period but the two I mentioned (LSU purple fig and the 'Petite Negra' fig) can be grown indoors year-round while producing figs at a small size. By keeping the fig in a small pot, it will stay small (think bonsai). My family member has been having quite a bit of fun with it and was excited when it produced figs. Even better, it has actually survived her 'care.' And, if your family member or mine ever wants a larger tree and has the space, they can plant it in a larger pot (or outside) and it will certainly grow.

I just remembered another slow-growing plant that needs very little care...the plants sold in jars and gel!

These will need less light but they don't need any care at all for six months to a year or more. I have a pair of these in clear gel and really like watching the roots grow.

Interesting.. that gives me idea maybe a sealed terrarium would be a fun project, but I don't know about those being exposed to afternoon sun and the potential heat. Will investigate!
