So has it been concluded yet that most coconuts can't be grown after they get prepared for international shipping and have probably been preserved with some type of gas to prevent the coconut sprouting?
This post has gotten very long, I just spotted a moldy coconut from time to time and then a very nicely grown one but I take it that was collected straight from a fresh tree.

DC, do you know if yours is a dwarf variety by now? Congratulations by the way, will you try to use all the coconut husk for the orchids in some way?

They're heat treated to kill pathogens on the husk. From my reading this doesn't usually penetrate to the embryo because the coconut goes bad rapidly if that dies.

based on the extremely limited knowledge of my neighbor and myself, it is a dwarf. of some kind.

non-dwarf varieties will not fruit shorter than 25' is what i read and this is not even 10'

it is a green/orange coconut in that it was really green, then orange and then brown as it matured which is a type of jamaican coconut according to the internet....so, i have a hybrid of some kind of dwarf and some jamaican orange coconut. go figure. there are millions of coconut trees IN florida and we get lots of floaters from the Caribbean too so.....it s true NoID

I have never sprouted a husked coconut but i have heard from others that it is possible

i was very pleased with the three phases i tried mine, good water in the early phase, nice milk in the orange phase and good meat once ripe....i have two aside to sprout so i can try those next

Okay, back to sprouting coconuts. DC... I task you, please, in finding me a coconut that's just starting to sprout and sending it my way. I feel the need to grow a coconut tree.

I even have a long-term plan in place.
Hey WW, do you still have this itch? i have a great one for you if you do.
