Sprouting coconuts

I just got to my place in the Keys. 2 straight days driving 15 hours/day. Ugh. Now I sleep for 3 days to recover. My yard is a jungle. Thankfully landscape guys are coming next week so they can deal with most of it and then I get to do it once they have it back under control.
I planted a coconut last winter that had just started to sprout when I left in May. It looks to be almost 4 feet tall. I'll try and get a pic and post here at some point.
Not as easy as it used to be. It's on lot line that used to be a vacant lot but a house got put in over the summer. Glad I planted it there. In a couple years it will be tall enough to provide some privacy.

So a regular coconut works. I thought it needed to be one that hadn't been de-husked. Hmmm. Four feet in a year... sounds like I'll get maybe two years out of it before it heads to daughter's house. Oh well, a good birthday or Christmas gift.

It was one that fell from a neighbors tree so it had not been de-husked. ie: it was brown and fuzzy.

WW you may be an excellent grower but KS isn't KW. My friends hsd their coconut in a house with a 7' / 2.1m ceiling for over 10 years.

So I may get much more time here for it... that's a good thing. Ten foot ceilings here.

Daughter has three story house with open middle going almost all the way up. So she's got probably 35 feet to work with. If we ever got a coconut, we'd throw a party!

OK WW, here you go.

In May when I planted this the top was just sprouting and there were no roots yet. Just scooped out a depression in the soil to set coconut at 50% depth.
That plumeria to the left was planted at the same time and it was a 2' tall stick!

That sounds like a pretty cool house and all I can think of is that it would be perfect for growing a couple of banana trees.

Sprouting a coconut sounds like a fun project. I've grown mango, starfruit, avocado, and papaya in the past from seed but just never had the space to keep them beyond the summer.

Looks like I can get several years growth before it moves on.

Daughter's house, Leafmite? Yes, it IS a cool house. A total rebuild of an old shirtwaist from late 1800s... completely gutted and brought back to original glory. One board stripped at a time. They've been at it for four or five years. About two more, maybe three, and it will be sit back and wipe brow time!

They are slow growers, for a palm. I have a five year old tree and it is 20’+
