I remember when I was really young, lived at grandma’s, she had a “summer kitchen.” A wood stove underneath an arbor that consisted of pipes, top was two bed springs mattress things, and grape vines crawling everywhere. It is still one of my favorite memories… life was so simple and good.

that sounds about perfect

i have realized that while i will not be self sufficient, likely in this lifetime, i can still make my life as homestead-y as possible to fit my reality.

i very much like the vibe i get of this outdoor kitchen

i have my bbq outside, for always, smoker in the patio, but i also have the fit pit which is outfitted with a decent (not decent) cooking setup....one day i will channel your grandma and make it really decent

the one thing i have going for me is reclaimed bricks!!! my neighborhood was built in the late 70s...my neighbor did a bunch of renovating years back and had all the bricks that they dug up from the old fill and foundation. many have marks and names and a lot have years in them 1918 and the like.....so when ruthie burns a hot dog (the best) it is really a century old connection to the past

LOL... I 've been collecting reclaimed bricks for decades. Go figure. Same recent find... daughter's house had a bunch of old brick piled in a corner from a carriage house. I've been laying a sidewalk along the side of my house for years, and now enough brick to finish. It's a slow process, as the old knees just can't take it for long.

I'm hoping 100 years from now someone will walk that sidewalk and have appreciation for all the different styles and history under their feet.

Burnt hotdogs are the best!

"Why would people ever want to go outside where it's dangerous, when they could live in their tiny cell in the big, safe city?"

Amen. And I hope they all follow that thought and stay put in their little safe place.

My little area of swampy suburbia is being increasingly invaded these days….

I am slooooowly making my house more self sufficient. Little ways but adding them up. I am still buying compost but way less, I still use hose water but way less, and we still buy our groceries but a little bit less lol

Eventually I will have to leave it less

While they are staying put I will climb aboard my motorcycle and go visiting friends from the internet. Contemplating a trip to Key West. From there I'd like to make my way up the coast to New Jersey, then out west to Kansas. Anyone up for a little f2f?

Better stick to that Key West and points in southern US for now Dusty. Pretty darned cold trip on a bike across the midwest right now. Brrrrrrr!! Sounds like a late spring/early summer road trip for the rest of that jaunt!
