Fruits and veggies? - Page 12 - Orchid Board

Before the pandemic, I hadn't grown veggies in any meaningful way for at least 10 years. Working 100% from home, I now have time on my hands. (With a garden, I also have thyme on my hands).

My garden is in an area opened up when we had trees removed a year ago. I'm growing tomatoes (Roma mostly), peppers (Serrano, cayenne, bell, sweet banana), okra, butternut squash, several herbs. Most of it was planted later than it really should have been, but so far everything is producing except the okra, which I think is just not quite tall enough yet. Probably will get okra over the next 2 or 3 months.

Planning raised beds for fall, winter, and next spring/summer.

I had a few of those at one time, never really found a good culinary use for them.

This winter I may plant yellow multiplier onions (a.k.a "potato onions"). The big onions have little offset bulbs which can be saved for re-planting.

Hmmmm. I just peel and use the top bulbs (pearl onion sized ones) like I would any other pearl onion, or slice and in stirfry, etc. The mother bulb (one in the ground) is best harvested earlier in year when the leaves are about 2' high. They can get pretty strong by end of summer.

I had potato onions before, but they kind of got overridden by the walking ones....

My Egyptian walking onions did get top bulbs, but they were always way too tiny to fool with (pea-size, hence never a good use for them). Either I was bad at growing them, my conditions weren't right, or maybe it was not a great cultivar (?)

Ancient history now, I'll never know.

Yeah, you should have gotten some inch and half inch ones on tops. As ya say, ancient history now.

I found several of these bugs all over my habanada peppers which are taking forever to ripen.. google-lens suggests they are "spotted lady beetle" but these don't look anything like the ladybugs I see everywhere. Good bug or bad bug?

Those are ladybug larvae.
