Epiphyllums are starting to bloom. Here is Epiphyllum Cranberry Punch. The flowers only last for a day or two, but there are lots more on the way, so a big plant like this will be in bloom for several weeks. These are also great in that they propagate easily from cuttings...just whack off a good sized piece, put in in a pot, and it will root from a node.

I lost my two big guys a couple years ago to q greenhouse freeze. Estacion gave me a start of his mom's German Princess. It's a dwarf, only gets to 3.' lol

I love digitalis. It is just amazing. If I plant it early enough, it gets big and blooms before the worst of the heat hits. The first time I planted it, I couldn't believe how big they got. They were amazing. I didn't plant any this year, and it's probably too late now. The summer heat down here kills them, so I have to grow them as annuals, but it's worth it. I love them so much with their big tall spires of flowers, They make me happy.

Never seen an Epiphyllum before. Kind of looks like a Christmas cactus on steriods.

Okay, Dolly informs me night blooming Cereus (also colloquially called Queen of the Night, by the way DC) is in that same category. I had a HUGE one for years. Blooms at night, bloom lasts one night, then gone. Serious intoxicating fragrance. Mine was about 5' tall and three feet wide. We used to have "bloom watch" parties, back in the day when I could still keep my eyes open after dark.

It died quite a ways back after an ice storm knocked power out for over a week. Tragic.

Here's an overall shot of viburnum I took yesterday. No idea what variety, but it's the earliest bloomer of the ones I have. It's just getting really started, and most blooms are still coming out and greenish colored. It's a nice display in between early to mid-spring blooming things. I'll take a closer picture when it really gets going...

Well. My saddest spring experience: I mulched my American West Ornipets with about 4-6" of leaf mold. I patted myself on the back for getting it done early. Then we had yet another cold snap and I discovered the voles had eaten most of the stalks down to the ground as they came up. They look like corn cobs sticking out of the ground!

But, these cheer me up. Virginia Blue Bells, even better this year.
