That is one amazing tree. And still growing so well, despite the huge cavity in the middle. Contortions of the trunk are just fantastic. Wouldn't that be a fun place to mount orchids?  |

Since this post has been brought up again, I have to comment on how amazing that tree looks! I'm always in awe of such old trees, which provide a living link to a human history so ancient that we can't even imagine what life was like back then.
I sincerely hope that the Xylella fastidiosa wreaking havoc in European olive tree plantations will not reach Portugal (if it isn't there already) and that amazing tree. It would be beyond tragic to lose it.

It is already here but, so far it has been detected only in Lavanda bushes, not in olive trees.
It can kill not only olive trees but also vineyards, coffee plantations, etc.
