Are these the generally accepted rules? Or shall we implement them here?

I, personally think we need a more general classification because size limits gets into the problem where someone grows a species especially well and it exceeds the norm for that plant species. I checked Andy's site and he has a classification of "miniatures". I tried calling just now to see how he places plants into this classification and he isn't home right now. Perhaps next week (after the shows) someone can call (I'll be out of town and out of touch for the week)?

Actually, in the interest of brevity, can't we just have a sub-forum called "Miniatures" and let each person decide for themselves if the plant they are posting about is a "mini" or not? Why complicate things?

Well why not name it 'micro, mini and compacts' .. that covers all the ground
and post the term ranges that have been defined in this post.

For judging purposes, the AOS considers a plant as a 'miniature' when it is 6" (150mm) or less in height, *not* including any inflorescence.
I found this out by reading a show booklet for the New Orleans orchid society show (coming up the first weekend in June).
Another toothsome tidbit: for judging purposes, all plants may be entered in only one category, EXCEPT miniatures, which can be entered in their genera group (pleurothallis, encyclia, etc.) and in the 'miniatures' category as well.
However, the fact remains: all miniatures are not pleurothallids (which this forum apparently believes); in addition, all pleurothallids are not miniatures!

Not exactly... Being out of touch for any longer is considered alzheimer's.

As Nancy stated above, the deciding factor in whether a 'chid is a mini or not depends onthe size of the leaves...they can not be longer than 6 inches

I just got back from my orchid meeting and the subject came up! Amazing

I spoke to our resident miniature orchid goddess, Garnet, and she explained it to me.
