There are many great people on this forum who have lots of info to share but I fear they may stop because some advice really is not foolproof. Things change based on conditions, application, environment.. and the list can go on forever.
Just last night I wanted to help someone on the forum with something I had been testing, but it's trial and error. While I have some information, it may not always work. In any case, I wrote my post 2-3 times. I read it, re-read it repeatedly, but I did not post it because I am not an expert, and that area is not an exact science yet...and frankly, I was afraid to share. That is the short of it, I was just plain too intimidated to offer my methods.
I can only speak for myself, but I am a fairly shy person and I do not often propel myself into uncertain waters. For many, it is a big step posting on a forum and sharing with others. It can be very scary! Now on top of that fear, people have to worry that others who don't know them can rate them based on their information in what can often be very subjective.
All I can say is being a wallflower isn't always fun but, it might be where some of us are headed if we cannot get over the fear to post now.

This rep thing is a two sided swored...just like DJ said. I seem to recall a forum (that shall remain nameless) that had a ranking thing going for a while and it ended up getting taken away because people were mean.
TIme will tell!

You're right Sue, it might be the 'mean people' that blew it over there.

It is sad to think that anyone would hold back sharing their experiences. Isn't that what this site is about? To share! Who is to say any advice is foolproof or not? It's advice! It's what one person experiences. Why is everyone focusing on the negative? Are people intentionally out to be hurtful to others? It sounds a bit paranoid to me. We are here to share so why be intimidated. Granted, things may work for some that don't work for another but isn't having the variety of information the opportunity that opens doors to possibilities we may not have encountered or thought of?
Who is to say who is an 'expert'? If a person claims to be an expert then they close themselves off to all that they can learn by and through others. I, for one hope to never be an 'expert' for there is always more to learn and I would not want to shut myself off to someone else's experience that I may benefit from.
What Marty has set up is suppose to be a help not a hinderence. I don't understand why some don't see it as something positive and aren't grateful to Marty?
I for one am .. Thanks again Marty! .. You rock

DJ, please don't ever feel like your input is not good enough!
I've said this a number of times
throughout my posts on this board and I'll say it again:
If you want to learn how to grow orchids, READ ALL YOU CAN, and then take bits and pieces and do WHAT WORKS FOR YOU, IN YOUR CONDITIONS.
Everybody's opinion counts here at Orchidboard...and those of us who seek advice have to understand that the information we are given comes from a person with different conditions! There is no set standard, no absolute rules and surely, no guarantees!
I welcome your input, DJ...post away
From the amount of wasted time on this subject in this thread, I'm thinking I don't like the Rep system
When I give somebody advice, I don't do it for the credit...I do it because hopefully, I may be able to help somebody as so many people have helped me.
