OB slow lately - Page 2 - Orchid Board

Marty, we shouldn't expect you to run this wondeful place out of your own pocket...when and if the time comes that you'll need member contributions, count me in. No question! I know you've been rebelling against this idea but if it's necessary for a small fee to be enacted, I doubt if most of us would have a problem with that. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

Actually, a small fee makes sense, Marty. It would seperate the casual users from the serious users. It might reduce the overall postings, however. There are lots of folks here that would not agree to a fee (just a guess) and what about international money forms? Sounds like a real headache to me. You know what? I think it's just fine the way it is right now on whatever servers you have. We haven't had much problems so far so let's just see what happens in the future.

Somewhat related (but maybe not), I have noticed that the 'Random Gallery Pictures' have not changed on my computer this past few days...I'm missing Sue's pics! LOL!

Mine change with every page I visit. They seem to migrate (rotate) to the left.

My pics rotate, but its the same 4 or 5. I just keep seeing paphwarps non-blooming ascocendas over and over (no offense paphwarp!)

Yes - you are correct. No moving waterfall and a little better response time. (I will say that the waterfall WAS a nice "touch" however).

Since we got a few ads, I swapped random ads and random gallery photos.

Ads are now on Top and Gallery photos are on the bottom. If you have something to sell, place an ad with a photo and it will show up. We have a great "ebay" like system here, but no one is selling or buying anything - too bad!

Our Gallery is very nicely utilized though.

Well.... I can live without the waterfall for a while

We will stick to the current server for now. I may streamline/reduce the graphics a bit, if it really gets slow I'll make the jump. As for the member contributions, it's still a NO. If somone is paying, I'd at least want to give them something in return. Hey, maybe a VIP room with paid access, which would display a "VIP" sticker next to your name ???? hehehe. Maybe later

If information is to flow and OB is to grow, then access to the information has to be free.

I'm hoping that we will be able to sustain growth of OrchidBoard from vendor advertising and google ads.

I'll be honest here, I always found OB to be slow in loading [which was a pain when I was trying to look at Tindos and other members vivs

] and wondered if it was the waterfall causing it

Now though it loads much quicker [read it doesn't drive me insane and seems to load as fast as other orchid site/forums do

] *but* in netscape navigator.. it still seems to take an eternity to load in internet explorer so I use netscape instead

I have been having a problem with the OB too. I thought that it was my computer acting up again...
