Default Question about "Infractions" on member profile

When you view a member's profile page, there are a number of different tabs to view. The last tab is "infractions," and if you click on it it gives you the option of giving that member and infraction.

I had never taken much note of it until today. I viewed the profile of a spammer and gave the infraction just to see what would happen. Is this something that is supposed to be available to members? What does it do? When I did it, I could see it in the profile, but wasn't sure what else happens. Oscarman was quick to clean up the spam posts and wield the ban hammer.

Issuing an infraction places a temporary ban on the member receiving it. The mods are then notified and if it is a true spammer, we can then remove all posts by that member and change the temporary ban to a permanent one.

We need to be very careful in our use of the infraction button. It actually wields a lot of power and could create bad feelings within the community if used inappropriately.

If you, or anybody here, sees what they know is spam, then of course, we want the infraction issued.

If something is posted by a participating member of the community that makes you think it's an inappropriate post, the first step should be contacting a moderator and asking what they make of it. If any action needs to be taken, it will be done by a mod. Going immediately to an infraction without first running your thoughts past a moderator here is not the way to go.

Thanks Sue, that clears it up for me. I was a bit puzzled by it, and IMHO it's not needed here 99.9% of the time. I can see good use for it though if there is a spammer on the loose, and no mods logged on.

On any other board, I'd be quite worried about a tool like that being abused, but I just don't see it happening around here That's why I love this place! Alright everybody! Group Hug!

Luckily the infraction button is never used here. There are never any problems, thank goodness. I was a member of a french guinea pig forum once. People were rude, and the use of infractions got to the point that the forum was closed down. What a shame, there was good info there.

But being in Europe, I am on OB before most of the mods are even awake, so it is quite often that I find early morning spammers. Then the infraction button is really useful!

I've used it, too, at early hours to mark spammers. I'm not entirely sure it solves the problem, but it seems that by early morning, when the moderators are on the spammers are GONE and good riddance.

Thanks you Camille and Ronald for your eagle-eye observations .. I don you as Jr Moderators (sorry to let you know that we can only allow you to weild 'rubber guns'..
The fact as already stated is that you can infract a member .. but it's the moderators that have the ability to permanently ban the abuser ..

Great Job Guys,
You keep the OB up, running and CLEAN!

Sorry to be thick, Dorothy, but how do I contact a moderator?

I had an e-mail telling me that there was a new post in a thread I subscribe to and when I checked, there wasn't and then I looked on the member list and the Poster wasn't a member either. Not sure what to do about it.

Thanks

Heather
