orchidboard.net does not exist. all it would take is changing the banner to alert users to the new site. no reason to hack this one beyond to save guides to be memorialised on a new forum.

There is an enormous amount of information here easily found with the Search function. Many very knowledgeable members left lots of information but no longer post. Abandoning this data to jump to a new, empty site would be a very poor solution to the problem.

I strongly agree. well except I might quibble about how good the search functionality is, I found searching on google to find stuff here is easier than searching here. A not uncommon experience for this era of tech.

Any help with ecommerce, I am in, is what I do for living and I have a hosting and server service company. I've always wanted to offer help or propose a Spanish IP alternative as second language, but it look complicated somehow and the server fee with the amount of multimedia managed by the forum..ummh I am not sure if Marty gets any extra income.

Forums softwares are out dated everywhere because Forums are not a trend since a few years ago, Facebook and Tweeter have acquired much more relevance with groups nich or topics and is multilingual with automatic translation.

After a while you get used even if the look & feel is really primitive . I do agreed that the search and contents history is priceless, I have enjoy many old threads and old members expertise advices.

I totally agree with Sade here, but, while it might be 'primitive' I think it is far superior to Facebook etc. Long may it continue as a Forum!
Another Forum I belong to, and Mod on, has converted to much more up to date software and to be honest it's not a lot different and the Search function still lets us down sometimes.
Be grateful for what we've got! If it fell down overnight we would be lost!
(Is there an Admin/Mod willing to hold a list of members' email addresses (voluntary/opt in) just in case the worst should happen? Just so they can advise what's happening and if/when a new forum is created?)

Sure, I would store them. But it would need to be voluntary. I can “see” the email the member signs up with. But wouldn’t want to just capture them. Feel free to PM me your email if you want to opt in, and I’ll start a list. But I suggest not holding your breath awaiting change. It appears change goes less rapidly than orchid growth… requiring even more patience.

Facebook is a terrible site. In almost every way. I do not use it at all except for work where I have no choice (we use their "workplace" corporate version). They put way more money into monetizing their users than they do into making facebook a good site.

I think forums can be done well and have a place on the internet. But there a lot of usability issues here that could be improved. Which is why I offered my services. It is unfortunate that even with volunteers with a background like mine we can't get these issues fixed.

Yes its terrible that facebook has effectively killed most hobby forums. I know I'm missing out on a bunch of orchid stuff but I refuse to use facebook. It would be awesome to do a site overhaul and modernize a lot of the functions.
