WW ----- that's the only case where I have posted pictures in three different ways.
It is assumed that linking images from google drive doesn't actually use up my own storage quota within OrchidBoard.
So ----- we should only focus on the other two ways ---- not the google drive linking. The google drive link is basically to allow others to view the image with full image quality - as it is known that regular uploads to OrchidBoard results in not just a smaller file, but a highly compressed file - where quality is reduced even if you upload a 'regular' 1024x768 file. That is, if you upload a regular 1024x768 file having a filesize of 500 kB, then OrchidBoard actually does some work on it, and results in a 90 kB file (for example). And the image quality - in some cases is noticeably reduced as a result of that. But that is understandable, as the server has drive storage capacity limits. But ----- linking to a google area (as a secondary source) does allow some users to view 'full quality' images - which is what my google links are for. So even if the google drive links (one day in the future disappear for any reason), then at least we always have the local OrchidBoard pics to fall back on.
Totally understand the 'rules' of OrchidBoard WW. I'm also very careful in the way that I convey my thoughts - hence I wrote 'if permitted' or 'if allowed', which I should add ----- it is fine if 'not allowed'.
I just won't post extra orchid and flower pics if I have run out of quota space (and if creating a second account isn't encouraged or recommended). I'm totally happy with just chatting to nice OrchidBoard members here and to see/enjoy their orchid pics, which is why I joined OrchidBoard in the first place.
I'm not going to delete attachments, because all those attachments are associated with images posted on orchidboard - for the benefit of sharing pics. Deleting attachments is not going to help - because that would result in maybe 'crosses or X symbols' or broken-images (no-image), blank spots all over the place in the forum threads that I created. So deleting attachments is not recommended.
My google drive links are 'externally stored'. However - the usual 'add as picture' option from the google drive links doesn't actually work (unlike photo sharing sites).
But ----- it is well-known that ---- even if the 'add as picture' option works (for external sites) ----- one pitfall or drawback of relying only on external link images is ------- if that external site either goes down temporarily, or goes down permanently), then there is nothing to fall back on.
Your comment about 'really unnecessary' is only because you didn't realise that I was only going to
temporarily use my own member gallery area for sharing pics (even though I had mentioned it already in an earlier post in this thread) - the reason that is.
You didn't understand the situation - just as I hadn't yet understood the situation - until Camille did a check on total file attachment constraints ----- the 70 MB limit.
Just to recap (explaining the multiple links method again) - my approach involved showing attachments, as well as external links ------ which allows other members to quickly have access to local images (quickly, but possibly with compromised quality), as well as higher quality images from the external site. And - if the external site goes down ------ as mentioned, we can fall back to local images (even if quality is reduced).
